Price Rite Marketplace, the discount division of Wakefern Food Corp., earlier this month unveiled its new store prototype with the remodeling of three Pennsylvania stores – Bethlehem, Allentown and Secane.

The newly refurbished units, all corporately-owned, are part of a Wakefern pilot program which the Keasbey, NJ-based cooperative wholesaler said focuses on deep discounts, enhanced fresh offerings and an “improved shopping experience at those Lehigh Valley and Delaware Valley units.” Previously, Price Rite has said it hopes to rebrand and upgrade all of its 66 locations.

“For more than 20 years, Price Rite has been proud to offer incredible value and fresh products to our shoppers,” said Jim Dorey, president of Price Rite Marketplace. “Now we are moving forward by cutting prices further on hundreds of items while highlighting our fresh offerings and making it even easier to spot extraordinary deals in our redesigned and reimagined Price Rite Marketplace stores.”

The company said the three-store rollout combines a new store design with deeply discounted branded and private label products and features a new segregated area in the stores – “Drop Zone.” The “Drop Zone” has been designed as a unique in-store destination, where customers will find “extraordinary” deals, special surprise buys and “must-have” products typically priced $3 or less.

The stores in Bethlehem and Allentown unveiled the special deals along with newly redesigned layouts, joining the Secane store whose initial remodeling was completed late last year. At that Delaware County location, which was originally a Super Fresh store and became the first Price Rite to open in the Philadelphia area in 2005, customers will now also find bright, revitalized store décor, including a market-style produce department with new LED lighting. Wakefern said that it will purchase thousands of pounds of produce every year from farmers from 16 different Pennsylvania towns.

Price Rite Marketplace opened its first store in 1995 under the name Price Rite Supermarkets, and currently operates stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Maryland and Virginia. Three of its stores – Paterson, NJ; and Garfield, NJ (Inserra family); and one in Camden, NJ (Ravitz family) – are owned by current ShopRite member/owners.
