Earlier this month, Jennifer Carr-Smith resigned as president of Peapod, effective September 15, 2017. Carr-Smith resigned from the Internet-driven delivery organization for another opportunity, parent form Ahold USA noted.
Ahold USA veteran executive Walt Lentz, currently head of supply chain strategy and operations for Peapod, will oversee the operations of Peapod on an interim basis until a permanent replacement is named.
“We wish Jennifer well and thank her for her leadership at Peapod over the past two years, during which time she helped to further its goal of innovating and providing customers with convenience, value and an unparalleled shopping experience,” said Kevin Holt, chief operating officer of Ahold USA. “I am confident that Walt’s strong leadership will move Peapod forward during the transition.”
Carr-Smith, who was hired by former Ahold USA COO James McCann (who resigned from Ahold in October 2016), joined Peapod in June 2015. She replaced Andrew Parkinson, who, along with his brother Thomas, co-founded Chicago based Peapod in 1989. Royal Ahold acquired a 51 percent stake in Peapod in 2000 and purchased the entire company in 2001.
Peapod remains a relatively small unit of the now combined Ahold Delhaize organization. Sales for 2016 were estimated at about $760 million. The company is based in Skokie, IL and serves 24 markets, most of which are in Ahold USA’s current trading area. Peapod also has more than 200 Pick-Up sites at existing Stop & Shop and Giant store locations. However, it remains an unprofitable unit of a very large supermarket organization.
In late 2014, Peapod opened its largest fulfillment center – a 400,000 square foot depot in Jersey City, NJ – to serve the Metro New York region, the largest online grocery delivery market in the country.
Before taking the post at the online grocery division of Ahold USA, Carr-Smith served as the chief operating officer of J. Crew’s online business, where she led J. Crew’s transformation to a digital retailer with strong e-commerce capabilities. Prior to her role at J. Crew, she served as chief operating officer for Giggle, an omni-channel retailer focused on baby gear; chief operating officer for Gilt Groupe, an online shopping company with more than six million members; and in leadership roles in finance, strategy and operations with Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation and Drugstore.com.
Prior to shifting to Peapod in 2016, Lentz was served as senior VP-supply chain for Ahold USA. He joined the retailer in its Giant/Carlisle division in 2009 after a career in logistics and distribution with Kellogg’s.
