Al Dobbin, former Giant/Landover executive vice president and COO passed away last month inBethesda,MD.
A lifelong Washingtonian, “Dobbie” was a respected community businessman who spent 46 years at Giant/Landover. He started as a part-time cashier in 1954 while attendingAmericanUniversityon a scholarship from Giant, and eventually worked his way up through almost every facet of the company. After graduation, he became manager of his first store in 1956, and then became director of training and personnel in 1957 and warehouse manager in 1959. In the 1970s, he became vice president, then senior vice president, and finally chief operating officer and executive vice president before retiring in 2000.
Dobbin was active in industry affairs. He was a respected member for 15 years with the Food Marketing Institute’s board of directors. He was recognized by his peers with the St. Joseph Man of the Year and the N. M. Cohen Award and was a member of the Maryland Food Industry Hall of Fame. Throughout his career, he connected with thousands of employees and customers with his genuine friendliness and gentlemanly conduct. He was also invited to companies around the world to share his business expertise.
Dobbin is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joan (Gorin) Dobbin; children Steven Dobbin ofMt. Airy,MDand Leslie Dobbin ofRockville,MD; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Mitchell Dobbin.
